The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development recently calculated how much each affluent country spends on social programs. When you include both direct spending and tax expenditures, the U.S. has one of the biggest welfare states in the world. Comment: There's probably no other country in the world where there is so much belief in myth as in America. I think it was only the former Soviet Union that could beat the US in this regard. Yet I have my doubts.
